With almost a thousand episodes, we have an insanely huge number of characters in the entire series and more characters are going to keep popping up as long as One Piece is still ongoing. To choose the 5 most strongest One Piece characters from that insane amount of characters can be as difficult as finding the One Piece (Ok, that was a little exaggeration 😂).

Everyone already knows who are the strongest pirates ! The following list will present you the Top 5 Strongest One Piece Characters and it won't just be limited to those who are alive, it'll be from all of the One Piece universe, regardless of the fact whether they are dead or alive or not considered canon. By this list, you will also be able to understand or recall the strength of the One Piece verse. In other words the : "One Piece Power Levels"

5) Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) :

4) "Red-Haired" Shanks : 

Shanks is probably the strongest One Piece character who is likable, lovable, and appreciated by everyone (Pirates, Marines & Revolutionary Army). He is the only current Yonko who is on good terms with Monkey D. Luffy and he is also one of the most powerful One Piece character. It's reassuring to think that Luffy still has a very powerful ally who he can depend on. Remember what Shanks said to Higuma when he hurt Luffy :

« Listen up… You can pour drinks on me, you can throw food at me… You can even spit on me. I’ll just laugh that stuff off. But… Good reason or not… Nobody hurts a friend of mine. »

Shanks doesn't seem to have any Devil Fruit as Oda told the fans. Yet he is one of the four Yonko who are known to be the strongest characters in One Piece

There isn't much known about his physical abilities except the fact that he withstood a blow from Whitebeard with only a single-arm. The shock was so powerful that the sky split in two. Later, Eiichiro Oda indicated that the sky split in two because of Whitebeard and Shanks using their Conqueror Haki ! 

There are a few other moments as well who also prove his physical prowess.

He is the youngest Yonko, yet not only is he more intelligent and empathetic than them, his strength is also on par with the other three. He became a Yonko because of a reason, which is that he is very strong. He doesn't have any Devil Fruit so where does his true strength come from ? How is he one of the strongest characters in One Piece ?

It's because :  HE HAS THE STRONGEST HAKI IN ONE PIECE RIGHT NOW !

He can use all three forms of Haki just like Edward Newgate (Whitebeard). Not only that, his Conquerer's Haki is the strongest. Oda mentioned that Shanks could have knocked out all 100,000 fish men pirates during the Fish-Man Island arc using his Haki. Which is double the number of what Luffy did as Luffy could only immobilize 50,000. By infusing Armament Haki with his sword, he was able to block Admiral Akainu's magma punch which had burned some strong figures like Ace, Jinbei and even Whitebeard in the past.

By using Observation Haki, he dodged the jug that Whitebeard threw at him. He wields a sword called Gryphon and also used to have many duels against the strongest swordsman in the world : "Dracule Mihawk".

Shanks is uber talented and one of the strongest characters in One piece who we don't know much about as compared to the other Yonko.

Moreover, during the battle of Marineford, Shanks was in altercation against Kaido in the New World to stop him from attacking Whitebeard. From the other side of the world he managed to come to Marineford to end the war.

The third strongest character in One Piece is the strongest creature in the world : "Kaido of the Beasts".

Kaido has been captured and tortured by the marines and the other Yonko several dozens of times, they even tried to execute him but failed. At once instance, he jumped about 10,000 meters high into the air in an attempt to kill himself and when he landed back, all he got from the fall was a little headache ! The strongest physical creature Kaido is without a doubt strong enough to make it to this list of top 5 most powerful one piece characters. He is unable to die, even if he tries himself. He may very well be the least intelligent out of the other four on this list but he has everyone beat in sheer physical strength. He is also one of the current four Yonko (All of them are considered the strongest characters in One Piece)

« People often say 'If it's one-on-one, Kaido will win.' On land, sea, and air... among all living things, he is a pirate who is known as the 'strongest creature ! »

This sentence just prove how incredible Kaido's power is !

When it comes to physical abilities Kaido is the strongest One Piece character. He is pretty much invincible as nobody can kill him. He was only annoyed by the insane hits he got from Luffy's Elephant Gun and even the Gear 4 which is Luffy ultimate & strongest form was only able to do next to nothing.

He once sank a total of nine ships without breaking a sweat.

On top of being one of the strongest characters in One Piece, he is quite malicious and aggressive, he seeks war and chaos. He often questions the existence of the world and life itself. He thinks that the world is too mundane.

SPOILERS : When he clashed with Big Mom, the clash was strong enough to split the cloud itself.

Now let's get to his Devil Fruit. While there were many theories about whether or not if Kaido even has a devil fruit, it turns out he does. He had eaten a Mystical Zoan type Devil Fruit which allows him to transform into a blue scaled Dragon, a circle of flames also appear around each of his arms. By transforming into a dragon he becomes capable of flying. In other words, he becomes a true beast in every possible way.

2 - Edward Newgate (Whitebeard)

Before his death, Edward Newgate AKA Whitebeard was the strongest One Piece character. He was the man closest to the One Piece as well as one of the Yonko who rule the New World.

Whitebeard was a man so badass that he called himself Whitebeard despite having a beard (he only had a white mustache) and nobody ever questioned him.

Now let's get on to what makes Edward the most powerful One piece character of his time. He gained the title of the Strongest Man in the World even before Roger's death. He was known to have the power to literally destroy the whole world. His devil fruit, the Gura Gura No Mi (Tremor Tremor Fruit) is considered as the strongest devil fruit among the paramecia class. It allows him to become a quake man who can generate quakes and tremors of an insane magnitude at will.

Whitebeard appears at Marineford :

Fleet Admiral Sengkou acknowledged the power of his Devil Fruit and said :

« It may very well be us that meet our end here today... Because that man... HOLDS THE POWER TO DESTROY THE VERY WORLD ! »

But there's more than just his Devil Fruit that makes him the strongest character in One Piece. He was incredibly skilled in using a blade called Murakomogiri which is one the 12 Saijo O Wazamono (Supreme Grade). In the past, he used it to defeat countless marines and well known pirates.

Furthermore, it is obvious that the strongest man in One Piece would possess Haki, and Whitebeard was one of the few who could use all three types of Haki: Haoshoku Haki (Conqueror's Haki), Busoshoku Haki (Armament Haki) and last but not the least the Kenbunshoku Haki (Observation Haki). Conqueror's Haki alone gave him the power of a king, on top of that he could use his spirit to create an armor (Armament Haki) and could also sense the presence even if they have concealed it (Observation Haki). We can only imagine the limits of what he could do if he was actually Evil.

Becoming the Pirate King wouldn't have been much difficult for him, even Gol D. Roger wanted to tell him the road to go Raftel but he refused. Whitebeard most precious wish was to have a family and he actually made it ! 

However, during the battle of Marineford, the strongest character in One Piece at that time left us. He died a death of honor.

« Even in death, his body did not fall. His figure, taking down enemies while losing half of his head, was truly monstrous. The total number of sword wounds he received in this battle was 267. He was shot by 152 bullets and was hit by 46 cannonballs. And despite all this, his proud back, over the course of his entire life as a pirate, never received a single scar from running away ! »
